NRPS   Breeding Philosophy
The main goal of the NRPS is the breeding of performance horses and ponies. Inherent qualities such as soundness, character, endurance. willingness to work and external characteristics such as nobility. expression and typical light-footed movements are important factors to the NRPS breeding philosophy.

As mentioned earlier all these basic principles are aimed at the breeding of sport horses and sport ponies that can meet the great demands of equestrian sports. The NRPS is a performance-oriented breeding association and therefore places great demands on its selection system. This system is aimed at the selection of high value genetic material based on a deep-rooted talent for performance and riding quality.

The NRPS has 3 Breeding Registers

  1. Dutch riding pony with Arabian blood (NPA)
  2. Ponies must have a minimum of 25% Arabian blood and a maximum height of 1.48m:

The breeding register of riding ponies was already successful in the early years of the NRPS. Many NRPS ponies were performing at top level in equestrian sports. Five European champions are among the most important successes These NRPS ponies have proven their usefulness and versatility in dressage, showiumping and eventing at the highest level in Europe.

  3. Dutch riding horse with (Anglo-) Arabian blood (NRA)
  4. Horses must have a minimum of 12,5% Arabian or Anglo-Arabian blood:

This register can be divided into the category Riding horses small size (1 .48rn - 1 .57m) and Large size Riding horses (from 1.57m).

The percentage of Anglo-Arabian blood is determined by the sum of the percentage of Arabian or English thoroughbred blood in a horse.

From the beginning. the NRPS has pursued a clear policy focussing on quality. The NRPS stallion selection is therefore very capable to compete with fellow studbooks. both in the Netherlands and abroad. The results of this quality policy are easily perceptible: NRPS riding horses are performing at a high level in equestrian sports, both in dressage and in show jumping.

  5. Anglo-Arabian thoroughbreds (AA)
  6. A closed register; only open to English or Arabian thoroughbreds

The breeding program for riding horses is marked by an increase in quality and a growing interest from breeders. This is probably the result of the fact that the NRPS breeding management stimulates the use of stallions that were bred for performance or have proven to be performance stallions, as well as the use of Anglo-Arabian stallions for the benefit of the breeding program for riding horses. In practice, cross-breeds between Anglo-Arabian thoroughbreds and riding horses show a great aptitude for performance. In a country like France. focussed on breeding performance. the Anglo-Arabian horse is more popular than the English thoroughbred when it comes to ennobling the breeding program for riding horses.
